Volunteering at Happy Pantry

Volunteer with Happy Pantry

Backpackers and WWOOFers welcome

Happy Pantry is a community food service helping people across our area get access to affordable food and a friendly face. We’re always glad to hear from travellers and working-holiday volunteers who’d like to lend a hand. It’s a great way to meet people, be part of something that matters, and pick up real Australian community experience along the way.

What you’ll be doing

No two days are the same — and that’s the best part. You’ll be involved in a mix of work across the property and the charity: light farm duties, caring for our animals, welcoming and helping customers, lending a hand at our BBQ and community events, and supporting our programs for people experiencing homelessness. It’s hands-on, varied and never repetitive, and volunteers often tell us they love the mix and the real sense of purpose. You don’t need experience — we’ll show you the ropes; just bring a willing attitude and a smile.

What we offer

  • A warm, welcoming team and a real sense of community
  • Varied, meaningful work — hands-on and never repetitive
  • A reference and a certificate of completion for your time with us
  • Fair, manageable hours — some days are busier than others, but never more than 38 hours in a week, and most weeks comfortably below that
  • The chance to give back while you’re on the road

What we ask of you

  • Turn up when you say you will — our members rely on us
  • Treat members, volunteers and staff with respect
  • Follow our simple policies and the directions of the shift coordinator
  • Let us know in good time if you can’t make a shift

A smoke-free and drug-free site

Happy Pantry is a strictly smoke-free and drug-free environment. We serve vulnerable members of our community, and a safe, clean and welcoming space matters to everyone here. Volunteering with us means keeping our site free of smoking, alcohol and drugs at all times. This is a firm condition of volunteering.

When you arrive

When you arrive, we’ll ask you to sign a simple volunteer agreement. It isn’t a complicated legal document — just a clear outline of the dos and don’ts, what we expect, and the basic standards that keep the property safe, respectful and enjoyable for everyone.

It also confirms that you understand you’ll follow reasonable directions from staff and supervisors. Because our work involves animals, customers and vulnerable members of the community, it matters that everyone works as a team and follows instructions when needed. Most of it is common sense, and volunteers usually appreciate having everything explained clearly from the start. The agreement protects both you and the charity, keeps things fair, and helps our programs run smoothly.
